Positive and Negative Stereotypes that I picked out from Get Rich Or Die Trying

Positive:
  • The crew look out for each other, showing unity within friends.
  • "That's enough lets go" and "I told you not to shoot and the first thing you do is shoot"- Marcus is trying to stop the robbery.
  • Athletic- playing basketball
  • Aspiring to be a rapper- Marcus from a yound age wanting to become a rapper called 'young ceasar' and becoming a gangster rapper "concentrate on my dream being a rapper".
  • Charlene's stepdad is strict, showing he cares for her. This is juxtaposed against Marcus not, even having a father.
  • Majestic [the biggest drug dealer] is like a father figure- his dialect towards many of his followers is quite wise, especially Marcus.
  • Black people are car dealers in this film
  • Also, they play priests
  • Rely a lot on RESPECT!!
  • Playing music producers
  • In love with one women
  • A father to his child- does not want his child living without a father.

Negative:

  • Smoking blunts
  • Holding and in possession of guns
  • Criminal activities- robbing the Columbines "where the big bills at"- obessesed with money
  • Lack of paternity "I don't know why I was looking for my father, all I know is I was looking for my father my whole life"
  • The grandad is a labourer " living like a 2nd class nigga"- Marcus says this to his grandad.
  • Drug dealers are all Black whereas, White people are police officers.
  • Vulgar dialect- constantly swearing
  • Majestic raped Marcus' mother and killed her
  • Family rejection, but paternity and the lack of it is crucial. Uncle Duce says to Marcus "who's your daddy"
  • "Time to join the family business"- Resulting into drugs at a very young age.
  • Black characters also play gun sellers- who sell guns to pratically to anyone - showing corruption.
  • Aggressive
  • Not obident and get kicked out of school
  • Getting into gangs
  • "You niggas got mo family, all you got is respect"- Family rejection.
  • "crack meant money, money meant power, power meat war"
  • Illegal driving
  • Majority of people are Black people
  • Shoot the police

Blog Buddies :)

Blog buddy1) Jatinder
[a picture of Alfred Hitchcock]

Short summary: Jatinders independent study is looking at the 'auteur theory' and if it still is needed in films. Her study will also look into one of the media key concepts and that is genre.
Areas of overlap: As, Jatinder is looking at the auteur theory and possible genre and different directors, she is also going to be looking into a genre that Get Rich Or Die Trying is classified under and that is blaxploitation.
What I've learnt: From her study I have learnt about genre development and how it has certain codes and generic conventions.

My second blog buddy is Mohammed
[a picture of the main protagonists Jay and Micheal Kyle]

Short summary: Mohammeds independent study is of 'My Wife and Kids' and how Black people are represented in the media. He is going to be focusing on the representation of this Black American well off family.
Areas of overlap: Well, we both are focusing on Black people however, my study is looking at the stereotypes that are being portrayed through the film Get Rich Or Die Trying where there is quite a lot of negative association. Whereas, his study will have Black people in a positive representation.
What I've learnt: The role of Black people has changed from selling drugs to more comical roles which can have its upside but, also another way of them not being taken seriously.

Self Directed Research

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Black people in the media, how would you percieve them? As media consumers from Althussers view point we are said to be "ideological status apparatus" this means that however the media wants us to behave, we do that. It somehow could either reassure us or manipulate us into believing that a certain race, ethinc group behaves a certain way.
An article from Wikipedia talks about the stereotypes of Black people, in this article I found quite a few similarties to how it links to Get Rich and Die Trying and generally how society has altered our minds.
"African Americans as a group have primarily been stereotyped as animalistic brutes in American culture: physically rather than intellectually oriented, hedonistic (sexual pleasures), criminal-minded, violent, and willing to rape. They are more likely to be portrayed as unrestrained, hot-tempered, and profane (inclined toward use of profanity(swearing)) than Whites or others in movies and television shows."
Evaluation: This passage is explaining how the society or media has portrayed Black people and that is of the following characteristics such as animalistic, into rape, strong and not that smart and vulgar dialect.
Similarity in G.R.O.D.T: Marcus's body structure and the way he walks is off an aggressive behaviour for in one scene called "gangsta" he barges through people and they are scared of him. He also, swears alot even to his grandad " I'm a fucking gangsta, grandpa". However, he is quite smart for he is also trying to better his lyrics.
The article continues on with the following passage:
"African Americans are generally portrayed as intellectually, economically, and culturally inadequate, and soliciting or in constant need of assistance from Whites and others"
Evaluation: This is explaining the position that Black people especially American Black people are seen in the society. It also, explains how Black people are inferior to Whites for they need help from White people.
Similarity in G.R.O.D.T: Economically Marcus does not live in a proper house, he begins with living in a basement however, there is a few critcisms in this statement for Black people now especially celebrities are flourished in a very expensive lifestyle and way of living.
At the beginning of the article in pre American society the values were that Whites undermined everyone that were not part of their circle "As art is often a reflection of any given society, these stereotypes can be said to represent some or much of the American society's dominant view of different ethnic groups. Early media portrayals of Africans, Asians, Native Americans, the Irish, Italians and others tended to be overtly racist". The art of stereotyping is quite racial and can be quite hurtful the entertainment aspect to stereotyping is there merely to mock certain people.
Black males in entertainment focusing mainly in music and print.
Hip- Hop music is extremely popular especially with the rise of certain artists such as:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

starting from the top to the bottom Chamillionaire,The Game and then 50 Cent to just name a few.
All these artists have one thing in common they want to break free from the gangster lifestyle and make something of themselves, this ideology is also present in G.R.O.D.T because Marcus does not want to sell drugs no more but, better himself and follow his dream- as a rapper. Oh yeah they all rap!!!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The image is of 'The Game' and the reason why I picked this certain African American is because just by his posture he is reinforcing the stereotype of Black males.
Firstly, The Game is not smiling which is stereotype that is associated with Black people, the reason for this maybe it is his signature look or as the headline suggests he does not need no one, this could be referring to anyone or anything so- breaking away from the misconseption that Black people rely on people even Whites.
Secondly, his body gesture seems quite aggressive with partially covered with tattoos this was a trend set by Tupac who, had tattoos over his body to express his emotions but, also seen as art.
Thirdly, breaking away from the stereotype that they are "economically not stable" he is holding platinum and a diamond incrusted necklaces which shows his power and strength.
Evaluate: Overall, I am trying to get across that even in print stereotyping is being reflected to us- and it is generally the stereotypes that society has drummed into us.
Music- especially Hip-Hop!
"The term hip hop (also spelled "hip-hop" or "hiphop") refers both to a musical (see hip hop music) and cultural genre or movement (hip hop culture) that was developed by African Americans and Latinos predominantly in urban communities over the last quarter-century."
Hip Hop music is some what of an art starting from the days of N.W.A to 50 Cent and The Game, music was the way to express yourself. A certain stereotype of Black people being entertainers is quite true for Hip-Hop is praticually dominated by them besides Eminem who is a white rapper with a lot of success. You could classify "The black person as entertainer"- from a sheet Mr Munroe gave. In G.R.O.D.T Marcus is seen as a child who started of making music by rapping in group who sold drugs in the night and possibly in the morning but, his true passion was music.
Hip- Hop influences many people to see how Black people lived and by expressing themselves they get heard. Kanye West released a song called "Jesus Walks" which is quite a controversial song but, sends a heavy and religious message a certain line stood out to me while I was listening to it "They be askin us questions, harrasin, arrest us"* referring to the police and how Black people are always being harassed - due to the stereotype of Black people being involved with crimianl activities. Even music has evolved into telling the truth and trying to break through these certain stereotypes.

Textual Analysis

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

GanGstaA
The scene that I am going to analysis is a scene called Gangsta , this basicaly is when you see the transition from Young Marcus to the rapper. It starts off with Marcuse walking into an abandon alley way the lighting is quite low key as you can only make out Marcus's outline, the clothing is part of the mise en scene and his clothing is a baggy grey hoody which connotes a dull vibe that could compensate as his personality and life. While walking closer to the man 50 Cent the voiceover says : " I don't know why I wanted a gun for all I know is that I wanted it". That statement sets up the whole scene for the gun connotes protection in Marcus's eyes but the dennotations to it would be lethal weapon. The man is wearing baggy clothing and a bandana, associated with gangs around the 1970's the type of clothing was quite famous in the Hip-Hop years aswell, this shows a representation of Black males around the 1970s and how they used to dress however, the way they dress then is still the same even now in society. The lighting on the gun handler is quite dark, there is a use of Front key lighting and we can see the silhouette of his shadow on the wall connoting the darkness and he is hididng.

Moving, on to Marcus's bedroom where the camera pans from a dark screen to his face being lighted quite dark the colours are reds, browns and balcks which is quite an sinster look on a 12 year old. As the camera, pans across his face in the mirror we see his reflection and in the reflection we see the gun. Marcus is reciting a KRS ONE's lyrics " watch my 9 millimetre go, bang!". The look on Marcus's face coincides with sinister look on his face however, his face seems quite comfortable with holding this gun. The music is non diegetic but also, parallel to the situation. The editing from now have been cuts and the shots have mainly been longshots and in the basement ( Marcus's room) close ups of his face in the mirror.

The camera continues to pan across but, we see a change in time also known as the "zeitgeist" because Marcus is older a teenager in fact, played by 50 cent. He is wearing the identical hoody as he did when he was purchasing the gun and he does not have the gun in his hand but, he still covers his whole face with the hoody. The type of lighting is from the bottom where we can see the facial structure of Marcus's face but, in fact see that he has no emotion for he looks very strong and is not smiling which is a common stereotype for Afro Americans for they do not like to smile. The representation so far is quite negative for it is a simplistic stereotype for the scenes title explains it quite neatly.

50 Cent can't bring his life story to life Randy MyersKnight Ridder Published: Wednesday, November 9, 2005

Rapper 50 Cent's so-called life is nickeled and dimed to death by Hollywood aspirations in the bloody, half-baked ``Get Rich or Die Tryin'.''Rather than being raw and vital like the best of hip-hop, ``Get Rich'' comes across as manipulated, packaged and tailored to the filmmakers' needs. Screenwriter Terence Winter (HBO's ``The Sopranos'') and director Jim Sheridan (``My Left Foot,'' ``In America'') take a clinical approach to the pre-stardom, gangster life of their star, whose 2003 debut album sold more than eight million copies in the United States. What they do is transform the popular 50 Cent, who was shot nine times in front of his grandmother's house, into a hero of Greek or Roman proportions. But while making Curtis ``50 Cent'' Jackson's young life into an ``Odyssey''-style journey rife with family drama, romance, tragedy, betrayals -- and one man's search for not only his father but the slayer of his mother -- the filmmakers forgot to breathe life into their main character. As a result, ``Get Rich'' seems stagy and phony. What a missed opportunity, because the rapper's compelling story offers ample opportunity for drama. The incomplete attention given the film's many subplots hints at severe editing. Such is the case with the lackluster romance between Marcus and Charlene (Joy Bryant of ``Antwone Fisher'').50 Cent doesn't help. Unlike Eminem (``8 Mile'') or Ludacris (``Hustle & Flow,'' ``Crash''), he simply doesn't have the natural acting talent to make us care. Sure, the hard-core rapper sheds a tear convincingly, but much of the time he's just scowling or smiling.Faring much better are Terrence Howard as a prisoner who saves Marcus during a stabbing in the showers and later becomes his record producer, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as the menacing Majestic, a family friend who wants to be king of the drug world. To his credit, Sheridan brings a razor-sharp accuracy to some scenes, from the trash-strewed streets where Marcus' mom deals drugs to the crowded and rowdy dinner table at his grandparents' home. But ``Get Rich'' fails because it never shows us what makes Marcus/50 Cent tick. We rarely even see him recording music or writing lyrics. ``Get Rich'' concerns itself more with spilled blood than the story it should be telling. `Get Rich or Die Tryin' '

While, looking for a definition of the word stereotype I found many suitable definitions that also, tie into the film 'Get Rich Or Die Trying'.

Theorists and Theory. Why?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Theorist : Vladmir Propp
Vladmir Propp theory is that you can jusitfy the identities of character roles like: the hero, heroine, villian, helper and a donar. This theory was first established in 1920 and the character has to complete a quest or achieve something. The hero in this film is obviously Marcus and the villain is his foe Majestic who was his former boss. Marcus's quest is too run away from this type of lifestyle but mainly representation of being a drug dealer.
Theorist : Antonio Gramsci
Gramsci was a political theorists but also, a well known Italian writer. He was highly fascinated by the Marxism theory. He also decided to reown and develop the theory of cultural hegemony.
Marxism - refers to the philosophy and social theory
Cultural Hegemony- is looking at society and how one cultural group can dominate society and everybody practices to be like.

Political context

Get Rich Or Die Trying can be seen as the zeitgeist because it follows the change of time and the mood that it has created. This film is full of meaningful metaphors but also, is very poetic however, it still does not escape the gritty reality of the ghettos. The film has been realeased after events such as 9/11.

Economic context

Many films like 'Get Rich Or Die Trying' are films that have been produced in 'Hollywood' the biggest film industry in the world. This films budget was $40,000,000 but in terms of "domestic gross it earned $30,984,537"..."earned additional $15,367,487 in foreign receipts".

Historical

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Since the 1970s the civil rights movement has managed to push and promote Black unity and independence.Influential leaders such as MLK and Malcolm X have taking different tactics to get the word across about Black people and the representation. However, the genre blaxploitation emerged in America from the 1970s and was designed to target urban African Americans. Blaxploitation was played by primarily Black people and was critcised by civil rights groups for the use of stereotypes and the negative perception portrayed. However, films like 'Barbershop 12 and 'Barbershop 2' shows a Black male owning his own barbershop and managing to sustain a healthy business. Get Rich Or Die Trying show the rise of Marcus and the stereotype of him changing as a typical Black male into a father.

Social context

As seen in contemporary Hip-Hop the Black people have been represented to having a very luxurious and easy life style. This type of culure has shown hem to have expensive houses, jewellery and cars depicting a utopia world. However, from previous films we have seen that Black people have been represented as low class people, who deal with drugs nowdays time has developed and changed. In this film, Black people have been seen to be living in a poor condition with a big family i.e. when Marcus lives with his grandparents and has to share a bed. However, from selling drugs Marcus then can indulge in buying expensive goods i.e. a Mercedes. This is showing the transition from Black people working and buying less glamourous things to buying goods that people can only aspire to have.

Narrative

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

A young boy called Marcus is usually abandoned by his mother who is a drug dealer for Majestic. After, a fatal death Marcus’s mother dies and Marcus decides that it is “time to join the family business”. He begins to sell cocaine but, still aspire to be a rapper as his part time job. The battle between the Columbines and Blacks arise in the neighbourhood and deaths occur. Marcus then, decides he does not want to live this lifestyle as a drug dealer and begins to change his life. He has a family and a baby called Little Antwan, after a close enough death Marcus becomes a rapper and releases his song called “Hustlers Ambition”.Homodiegetic narrator- The narrative structure is similar to "City Of God" the beginning of the film is shown from the middle then the rest of the film is a flashback until the middle scene of Marcus lying on the floor. Then the film continues from present days after he starts his recovery.

Ideology and Values

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Due to the controversy the film has encountered due to the original film poster when 50 Cent had a hand gun in one hand and a microphone in the other, the people thought he was promoting a pro gun and encouraging gang activity. However, some posters see 50 Cent with a baby in his arms and a gun in his back which caused a lot of problems. Later, the posters were changed to him holding a baby. The iconography that can be seen in the film is a gun and a microphone which shows the transition from a negative perception of Black people to a very positive view. Secondly, the awareness of drugs and how young people are in America who do sell drugs. Thirdly, the diversion between status and power and how the typical stereotype of Black people is quite negative.

Audience

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The film is addressed to urban African Americans especially males who can relate to the lifestyle of living in the ghetto. The primary audience is Black males, into Hip-Hop music aged between 15 to 25. However, the secondary audience could be people of all ethnicities so they can educate themselves in this type of lifestyle, males and females from the age of 15 to 25.It is quite simple, to identify the audience through the film because of the main protagonist.50 Cent has an influential impact upon many young males but also, due to the narrative and settings and the use of mise en scene it is quite simple to reach this target audience. However, the film has been censored differently in certain areas. In the UK, the film is rated a 15, in America it is a 16 however, due to the sexual and violence in Ireland the film has been rated 18. The size of the audience would be a mass audience because the target audience is quite big and many 50 Cent fans would be interested in watching his debut film. However, even though having a big audience the film was voted a flop at the box office, it was rated 3.0 out of 10 on the Internet Movie Database and part of the bottom 100.As an audience member I read and evaluated the text as a kind of biblical story of Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jacksons lifestyle. It actually made sense, some of his lyrics reflect his life and it is transparent through the narrative of the film.

Representation

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The main representation that is shown in the film is off African Americans partially in the ghetto, who have to turn to selling crack in their neighbourhoods to survive, this is a negative stereotype of Black males because during the film many stereotypes are made. For example, Marcus’s uncle taunts Marcus by saying “who’s your daddy Marcus”. This stereotype is made by 50 Cent because he is the main protagonists but also, his cast help with the stereotype of Black people being involved with drugs. However, there is a positive stereotype that many Black people turn to their dreams and make something of themselves.Black males are being represented in this way because firstly, it is a generic convention of the genre secondly, 50 Cent is portraying his lifestyle and who was involved with it. The representation is not fair and possibly not hundred percent accurate because there are many Black people who are doctors and have highly skilled professions. The film only shows the few that are into the gangster lifestyle. Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson has had the chance to promote this lifestyle and show the negativity to it. The rapper said a while ago “Being a gangster is not something you should glorify it’s a lifestyle that is only there so you can provide for your family”.

Genre

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Get Rich Or Die Trying can be acknowledged as a modern blaxploitation film. Blaxploitation is a genre that targets the urban African Americans, this genre came about during the 1970’s when many exploitation films were made. Criticised by many civil right groups that this genre portrays negative stereotypes. The major generic conventions of the genre are dealing with pimps, drug dealers, hit men and being based in the ghetto and this is present in the film. The major generic themes with Get Rich Or Die Trying is power, drug dealers feud and other themes that are not generic within the genre such as friendship and love. The characters are generically determined because Marcus is seen as a drug dealer, his mother is portrayed as a drug dealer but also, many males have sent this persona of being drug dealers. However, Marcus is also perceived as a rapper who writes to express himself. The audiences expectations of the text are fulfilled because it is a typical blaxploitation film but, without the pimps but its basis is in the ghetto of the Bronx, drugs and money is a key theme and a negative stereotype is being represented throughout most of the film. Many, characteristics are being treated ironically like how Majestic says “show no love, love will kill you” he then at the end tells Marcus “I love you”. In Get Rich Or Die Trying, the casting is primarily Black. The main protagonist is 50 Cent who has a big influence in contemporary Hip- Hop music. The use of 50 Cent would probably, increase awareness of this “gangsta” lifestyle but also, that it is not what it seems. “Gangsta” is a person who commits crime, does drugs into sex. However, due to society and Hip Hop culture “ganagsta” is seen to be a positive or hip thing.

Institution

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The institutional source of Get Rich Or Die Trying is MTV films but also Interscope. Shady. Aftermath I.S.A who also is a record label that 50 Cent belongs too, links to the main protagonists. The film has been influenced by the institution because MTV is a well know music channel that distributes latest music in all genres. MTV is a commercial institution, the difference it makes to the text is because it is commercial it is well known therefore, the reception for the film will be well known and recognised. The text has been distributed by Paramount pictures and the director of Get Rich Or Die Trying is Jim Sheridan who directed western films.

Media Language

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The connotations and denotations of the film are quite symbolic to the meaning of the film and that is he transition from a drug dealer to a successful rap sensation, in other words bad to good. Marcus is seen at the beginning, holding a gun the lighting is very low key and a close up is on his face with the gun. Marcus is seen reciting a few lines from a rapper called KRS, while looking into the mirror Marcus says "listen to my 9 millimetre go bang!" the camera pans across the mirror and fades into black then Marcus is seen as a teenager. The mirror scene shows the growth from a kid to a teenager. The denotations for a gun is a weapon that can harm people but the connotations is a protector but also, strength. Many people, don't know why they have a gun not even Marcus when he first purchases the gun in an alley way the long shot sees him walking up to a man, to the audience and he directly says to the audience "I didn't know what I wanted a gun for".The non verbal structure of the meaning in Get Rich Or Die Trying reflects the way the characters behave. Marcus the main protagonists is seen as the dominant character his body gesture is very strong but also, his persona comes across as if he is made from stone. Majestic points out that love isn't real "Rule number 5: Show no love, love will kill you". That motive is shown through Marcus's behaviour. The dialect is typical American colloquial language such as the reference to Black people is "nigga" in society that can be seen as racists comment however, Black people use it as a way of greeting. Marcus is also, seen as a character who is looking for love and that is his childhood love/best friend Charlene. Charlene is who motivates Marcus, to leave the ghetto lifestyle and pursue his dream. In the cafe, Charlene and Marcus are eating, the camera shot is a close up of the two. Charlene is curious to know what Marcus is doing, she asks him "So what do you do?" he replies with "I'm a ganagsta". Her facial expression, seems baffled and confused and carries on persisting on finding out what he does finally he replies with "I'm a gangster rapper". The clothing of the characters is a ganagster look baggy clothes, saggy jeans caps and bandanas. The significance of the mise-en-scene, sets and settings reflects the genre of the film and that is blaxoploitation. The generic conventions to the genre are pimpmobiles, guns, drugs and violence the settings are of the Bronx, and a typical ghetto neighbourhood infested with drug dealers. Settings and locations helps with the meaning of the film the other settings are a prison - which is significant because this is what makes Marcus realise that the drug life is not for him. He grows and develops his passion for music but also "expresses myself or die".Get Rich Or Die Trying tells it story from the point of Marcus who functions for most of the story as a homodiegetic narrator. A homodiegetic narrator is when he/she is inside the narrative as a first person. This makes it easier for the audience to see the parallel links between Marcus and 50 Cent but also, the soundtrack is gangsta rap music that reflects his career.

Proposal

For my independent study I have decided to focus on the representation of Black males and if the film “Get Rich Or Die Trying” either reinforces the typical stereotype or ,if it has changed the perception we have of Black males in society. The film is about a young Black boy called Marcus played by Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson who starts to sell drugs, after his mother’s fatal death. The film can be classified as a semi-biblical narrative as 50 Cents life is transparent in the film but also, the film is focused around the Hip- Hop and ghetto culture that is based in America around the 1970s, when the genre blaxoploitation began.

"If you think you know the story ... You don't know the man" [from Get Rich Or Die Trying]

This is 50 Cents debut film that honestly, didn't do that well but, the film did depict his lifestlye and can be classified as a semi biblocal story.
