Representation

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The main representation that is shown in the film is off African Americans partially in the ghetto, who have to turn to selling crack in their neighbourhoods to survive, this is a negative stereotype of Black males because during the film many stereotypes are made. For example, Marcus’s uncle taunts Marcus by saying “who’s your daddy Marcus”. This stereotype is made by 50 Cent because he is the main protagonists but also, his cast help with the stereotype of Black people being involved with drugs. However, there is a positive stereotype that many Black people turn to their dreams and make something of themselves.Black males are being represented in this way because firstly, it is a generic convention of the genre secondly, 50 Cent is portraying his lifestyle and who was involved with it. The representation is not fair and possibly not hundred percent accurate because there are many Black people who are doctors and have highly skilled professions. The film only shows the few that are into the gangster lifestyle. Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson has had the chance to promote this lifestyle and show the negativity to it. The rapper said a while ago “Being a gangster is not something you should glorify it’s a lifestyle that is only there so you can provide for your family”.
